Geocache Description:

“I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you”
Bob Dylan

This is the indigenous artists' tour of 4th St. Berkeley.

The cache will be found at the coordinates listed above. The difficulty is the muggle factor, which you could lessen by caching on off hours. The area is well lit at night and there is plenty of nearby free parking.

Before things were all yuppified, there was a Berkeley neighborhood inhabited by mostly blue collar families, workers and artists, and a few authentic, original establishments, frequented by neighborhood folks and their visiting friends.

Some of the artists are still there, some gone to less expensive environs. But the essential elements of the area are still intact. To see the original creators of this ambiance, find the locations of these caches. They are all Berkeley originals.

In the first location you'll find the waypoint for the second cache.

Bette's

There is a Bette [Kroening], just don't expect an actual ocean view. Since the early 80’s, the entire nearby boutique shopping district has been created to support people waiting to get into Bette's Oceanside Diner, except it's fast-track for singles, who meet and become friends at the counter.

Mon - Thu: 6:30am - 2:30pm
Fri - Sun: 6:30am - 4:00pm

There is a very strong muggle presence in the area most mornings, noons and evenings, plus a videotaped surveillance of the sidewalk, so we chose a nearby area to provide more surreptitious access to the cache.

Second cache is a microcache containing waypoint of the third small cache, which will hold very small trading items

Cody's

Codys
Cody’s has been around Berkeley since 1956. A second location was added in 1998 near the second Waypoint. Now that too, has gone, along with the original on Telegraph and a short-lived store on Shattuck. The times they are a changin'. Cody's was a pioneer in the book business, helping to establish such innovations as in-store author readings, and throughout the 1960s and 70s, fighting attempts at censorship.

Third Cache is a small cache, 16 oz., or approx. 500ml, holds logbook, pencil, small trading items. Large enough for some TBs.

Berkeley Potter's Guild
BPG
The Berkeley Potters Guild, founded in 1971 by a small and independent group of young hippie potters, is northern California's oldest and largest collective of professional ceramic artists. Other clayworkers, attracted to the ideals and energy of the group soon joined and the Berkeley Potters Guild was born. Because they wanted secure and permanent room to create, part of this original group incorporated, bought the site, and converted it into studios with the intention of maintaining their building for working potters.
Today, situated in what is now the heart of the East Bay artisans community, a new owner carries on this tradition and provides a workplace for 20 professional clay artists to create and sell a diverse array of ceramic art.

Their work is shown in museums and galleries world wide, including The Smithsonian, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Oakland Museum, The Los Angeles Museum of Art, The Museum of History of Moscow, Nieman Marcus and Fumiki of San Francisco. In 1992 a gift gallery was established, and currently showcases work from 16 Guild members. It is open to the public every weekend from Noon to 5pm and by appointment.
