Geocache Description:

Small wooded area near 2 of Como Parks Historic landmarks. Trails exist, so please use them. To open, find tab indent on cover. Please be sure to get lid on tight, and to rehide as well as found. Original contents include Log and pencils, free song, 97-98 Mixed Champs bowling patch, whistle/thermometer/compass keychain, coiled clip keychain, USA key clip, misc items & TB. When approaching this cache, you are on a 1 way street- parking is on the left side.

Lilly Pond

This is one of the varied Lilly Ponds in Como Park, which were all part of a beautiful network of ponds. The Pond & Bridge were built in 1896 and the pool was originally filled with heated water from Como’s Steam plant to help grow the Lilly's.  This is a smaller version of the nearby "Frog pond".  In some pictures, you can see The Lilly's sometimes grew up to eight feet in diameter!. The Marjorie McNeely Conservatory gift shop sells two different post cards depicting the Lilly pond from its heyday. They also offer a CD, which has links to pictures of the Lilly Pond.  I will be picking this up soon, so more details to follow.

 Look for another historical monument, the Mannheimer_memorial.  This  Memorial is in memory of Robert Mannheimer. It was presented to the Park Board May 15, 1905 and erected 1906. The nearby bird fountain was designed by Cass Gilbert and was made of wood pergola and smooth, clear marble from quarries of “Ca-rrar-a”, Italy with red brick steps descending down to Kaufman Drive.  The CD from the conservatory has an artist depiction of the fountain.
