In 1779, during the Revolutionary war, former soldier Shepard Kollock founded the New Jersey Journal and printed it on this site “to maintain the cause of freedom”. This location in Chatham, near Washington's Morristown headquarters, gave him excellent access to breaking war news. North Jersey’s only wartime newspaper, The Journal’s contents were filled with attacks against the British and the Loyalists. They referred to Shepard as the "Rebel Printer". Shepard Kollock had to be relocated along with his printing press numerous times as the British came looking for him. He continued printing all through the war and only missed one edition of the paper due to being on the run avoiding capture.
Today the site is home to Shepard Kollock Park which is located near the bank of the Passaic River. It offers a small playground, ball fields, boat launch and a covered picnic area with one of the coolest picnic tables we’ve ever seen. The park is closed between 10pm and 6am. In warmer weather, there is poisin ivy along much of the narrow trail. Best to wear long pants!
Parking is located at N40 44.287 W074 22.357.
