”NORTH CAROLINA ORGANIZED MILITIA!"
Welcome to the Markle IOOF Cemetery
located on the west end of Markle, Rock Creek Twp., Huntington
County. Burials here date at least back to the 1860's, maybe
before. The coordinates listed above will take you to the grave
of:
ELISHA
BROWN
CARLTON'S CO.
N.C. MIL.
WAR 1812
Capt. Ambrose Carlton's Company was part
of the Infantry detached from the North Carolina Militia in 1814.
It was part of the Fifth Regiment comprising soldiers from Wilkes
County. The companies were not numbered as were those of the first
detachment of 1812, hence the designation of companies by their
commanders' names. Other Browns serving in this company included
Samuel, Archibald, John, Peter and Whitfield...

This one was especially interesting to me. Elisha Brown is my
GGG Grandfather. I have a copy of his military record and pension
application records of his wife, Elizabeth (Redding) Brown.
Elisha served two short hitches and was honorably discharged the
9th of March 1815 at Wilkesboro, NC. They moved to Wayne co., IN in
1826, Wells co., IN in 1838. TFTC
