Geocache Description:

This cache is the 4th of a series of educational caches. I hope my students will take on the challenge to find this cache and earn a little extra credit.

 

The Mangrove Cache

 

 -  "Like the many-armed Hindu god Siva, the Red Mangrove tree squats in the mud and creates land out of the void.  Its many prop roots reach out into the water, and tiny motes of sediment fall at its feet.  The mystical belief in the cyclical nature of creation and destruction is also fulfilled, for the very nature of its creative role seals the doom of this unusual tree."

There are three species of Mangroves that grow along the coasts of Central Florida. These three species play a very important role as part of a marine ecosystem.  They help to stabilize the shorelines (can actually create and build shoreline), provide habitat or both marine and terrestrial organisms, and create an incredible amount of biomass that is found at the base of the ecosystem's food chain.

The cache is a micro container found along the mangroves.  When approaching the cache, do not choose the more direct route.  Park at the far eastern end of the area.  It is a short walk in shallow water to the cache, so be prepared to get your feet wet.........

 

 

Update 01/13/09: Container has been changed to a 4" piece of 3/4" PVC, need to remove the top only, and recover with natural flotsam & jetsam
