This cache is on the upper end of the Hondo Canyon Trail section of the Backbone Trail, at a location which provides a great view of Hondo Canyon.
I placed this cache recently while conducting a damage assessment of the Hondo trail, due to our recent torrential rains. My motivation for placing a cache here is to attract people to this beautiful trail and to provide more caches along the backbone trial. The trail is approximately 3 miles long and can be accessed from either the Saddle Peak Road or Old Topanga Canyon Road trailheads. I have placed a cache near both ends of the trail. The easiest access this cache is from the Saddle Peak Road trailhead and there are several other caches in this area. For the Saddle Peak Road trailhead, park at N34°05.027 W118° 38.180. The cache is about .17 from the trailhead. At this point there is a hairpin, switchback turn to the right, and a large, lizard head shaped rock on the left. The cache is near the rock. The cache container is a 3” x 4” plastic container, covered with camo duct tape. At the cache location you will share the lizards view of the upper reaches of Hondo Canyon. As always, be very careful climbing in the rocks and bushes and always look carefully before reaching into these areas.
If you have the time, you can continue down the trail to “The Meadows” cache (GC283A) and the “Majestic Oak” cache (GCN370). A shuttle vehicle at the Topanga Canyon Trailhead will avoid the long uphill return hike.
