Northwest Park Event
Welcome One and All!!!
Date: Sat., May 21, 2005
Time: Noon to 2:00 PM for the main activities and meal
Where: Northwest Park, Windsor, CT at the Picnic Pavilion
Directions to the park can be found at the above link.
Northwest Park, a 473-acre community recreational area, has over 8 miles of marked hiking trails, an animal barn, tobacco museum, nature center, picnic facilities, play ground and community gardens. The park is adjacent to
Rainbow Reservoir
Park hours are from dawn to dusk. Come and go as you please throughout the day, hiking, caching, by land or by sea! You may wish to hunt land caches in the morning, and water caches in the afternoon, or vice versa. Either way, just be sure to join us mid-day at the picnic pavillion.
Leashed dogs ARE allowed. We look forward to meeting some of our canine friends.
Upon arrival, please check in at the sign-in table located at the picnic pavilion and receive your nametag. Don't forget to sign the event logbook.
Travel Bugs: Please sign TB's in and out at the sign in table.
Bonus Prizes awarded for:
The cacher living the furthest away from the event (the longest distance from their home coords to the park)
A cacher meeting a milestone on the day of the event, in increments of 100 (100, 200, 300, etc)
A cacher with a birthday the day of the event (please let us know ahead of time), or closest to the event
The cacher bringing the LARGEST TB to the Pavillion - no living TBs (must have been launched prior to the date of the event posting)
The cacher bringing the SMALLEST TB (again, launched prior to the date of the event posting).
The travel bugs will be judged with an eye to VOLUME and area, not necessarily length!
Event hosts: Katydid & Miles Stone
Food coordinator: Zingerhead
. Food is potluck; bring a dish to share if you can. Please include a note in your log telling what you will be bringing. You may want to bring your own cooler. An alcohol permit has been obtained.
Cache placement coordinator: Miles Stone. We are seeking both land and water cache placement volunteers. Please note, some caches for the event may not become active until a few days before the event (unless previously placed in the park). There are also several Letterboxes in the park.
The State public boat launch is located at N41 54.879 W072 42.438. Follow Route 75 North. Where the road forks, take a left onto Rainbow Rd. Take a left onto Merriman Road; the boat launch is on the left.
You want the Rainbow Reservoir Boat Launch, don't confuse this with the River St. Boat Launch, also in the area.
Geo-swap: If you want to participate, bring a gift item (about $5 in value). We will draw one name at a time for someone to pick out an item, then pick the next name etc. etc. We will continue this until all items are picked. If someone is still out on the trail, their name will be returned to the container. One item per team, please. It does not have to be wrapped, and can be as simple as batteries or a TB tag.
Great News!
Garmin
has generously donated items for the event. We have received a limited number of hats, XL and XXL T-shirts, bumper stickers, and cozies. These will be distributed by random drawing at the time of the swap after lunch.
More Great News!
The Wilkens have generously agreed to contribute a piece of their coveted CACHE GLASS. This will be won by random drawing to a lucky cacher who must be present at the time of the drawing (sorry, it's too hard to track people down) and that does not already own cache glass (that includes you, yodadog).
Kids Activities: Kids will enjoy visiting the animal barn, Nature Center, and there is a playground immediately adjacent to the picnic pavillion. There will also be a scavenger hunt and nature crafts, thanks to gottgoto!
Clean Up: Anyone able to help clean up will be appreciated, as there is a refundable deposit based on emptying the garbage and leaving no trace.
If you have never been to an event before, have no fear! Geocachers are a friendly lot who come in all ages, shapes,
sizes, colors, gender, and experience. It's always great to put faces with the names we see in the logs. This is also a great place to come if you are new to caching or even just thinking about it.
Update!
It has come to our attention that two fellow cachers are getting married on the day of this event, Bblhed, and Odiferous Rex (no, not to each other, silly). In honor of their special day, there will be two labeled ammo boxes (one for each couple) at the picnic pavillion to which you may contribute to if you'd like. These ammo boxes will be hidden for the couples to find and keep after the honeymoon. There will also be a third (wedding themed) cache hidden which will remain permanent.
A special thanks to Nushiekitty for reserving the area, Sticks and Stones Photography
for the photo and RJ Ferret for a crash course in HTML code.
