Geocache Description:

NOTE: Hunting season (bow hunting only) opened in this Widlife Management Area on September 11. While these caches are, for the most part, close to main trails/roads, I would recommend wearing bright colors during the season and exercise caution and common sense as you may well be sharing the land with bow hunters.

This is one of my favorite spots in the wma. Along with Standing Boy #1 – The Gimmie, this cache is the only other one in the series that is achievable if you are on foot if 1) you do not want to take a long hike or 2) do not acquire the remaining caches over multiple trips/hikes to the area. The view here is obstructed slightly by the ridgetop treeline, but in winter and early spring the Chattahoochee Valley can easily be seen stretching for miles. For my money you can’t beat the combination of a beautiful trail hike, soft forests and view that this hide offers. I’ve hiked the Pine Mountain Trail, which has some great views as well, but this offers an unadulterated view of the valley and, given the proximity, is just as great at twice the price.

Cache notes: This cache is achievable on foot but requires a short hike along a foot trail that has some brief but somewhat steep elevation changes. If you are attempting several or all caches in this series in a single day, a mountain bike and plenty of water provisions are a must & give yourself plenty of daylight. This area does not get a lot of traffic in the off-season, so I’d recommend taking a cell phone (or, even better, a buddy) just to be on the safe side. After entering the wma, walk down the main road several hundred feet until you get to a clearing on the left with a footpath trail marker & a steep trail (when you come to a fork, take the path that keeps going up). If you are going to Standing Boy #3 – Field of Dreams after this cache, see that cache’s “Cache notes” for instructions.

NOTE: This area is managed by GA State Parks and therefore requires that caches be secured with locks. I’m in the process of getting the locks on now. If you find this one with a lock, the combination is 1-2-2. Please re-secure the lock when finished by putting the pin through the hole in the box (so that the screw or flange is inside the cache) then working the hole in the latch over the pin (may be a bit tricky at first until you get the hang of it).

About the area and general instructions: This is a 1,579 acre wildlife management area (wma) with some absolutely stunning views that, for my money and proximity to Columbus, easily rival Pine Mountain. The public is welcome in the area year round with bow hunting allowed from September – January. That said, the times I’ve been to this amazingly beautiful location (off season) I’ve had it all to myself (except for the whitetail deer, turkey and other wildlife I’ve seen), though I’m sure it gets busier during hunting season. The gate has been closed the times I have been to this wma during the off-season, but you can park on the left-hand shoulder of the road about 30-50ft from the gate so that neither the gate nor road are blocked. You can enter the area on foot or mountain bike. Wear long pants & insect repellant. Take camera – there are some great shots. If you are a runner, this is a FANTASTIC place for trail running, or you can just run along the main road for as long as your lungs will carry you.

About the series: This is a series that just offers an introduction to some of the many outstanding views and features of the wma. There are many more great places in this area to see – this series is merely a sampler. I’ve provided sort of a route through the wma by numbering the caches so that they can be done in a sequence. However, you certainly do not have to follow the ordering to pick them all up.
