The first part of this cache is a very pleasant hike through the Hach Otis State Nature Preserve. You will need to hike to the coordinates and answer the question before returning to your car and driving to the second part.
The Sanctuary opens at dawn and closes promptly at 4pm. Sorry no dogs allowed, and you may regret not having a camera. The views are great, but beware, the edge is steep and unfenced! There is more about the preserve at (visit link)
Always stay on the trails – you do not need to leave them. At the coordinates there is a tree engraved many times over the decades. You will just be able to make out LOL which was thought to be carved a century ago. JL also marked his initials – what was the year?
Now you have a date do the following sums to get your final coordinates.
2121 – date = ABC
2772 – date = DEF
And substitute into
41 35 ABC
81 25 DEF.
This forest used to be popular with hunters and there are lots of trees carved by them, but do not attempt to leave your mark on these trees.
It’s not too far to the second part, but you will have to return to your car and drive west.
I have given the answer to the first part in the clue; there are two reasons for this. Firstly I do not want to tempt anyone off the trails in the woods if they don’t see the answer easily, and secondly I would be interested in knowing how many people like to hike for their caches! – Let me know if you did in your log!
The second part is in a popular park used frequently for sports in the summer.
8th Jan 2006 - I noticed the road to the cache is closed. You can park in front of the library and walk up, its probably a 10 minute walk to the cache. Make sure you walk to the right of the picnic shelter along the front of back left baseball field. Hope this helps!
I hope you enjoy my neck of the woods!
