It's About Dam Time Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

joshbro: With a saddened heart I will be archiving this cache. It was the first I ever hid, but it has been moving around for some time. I unfortunately don't live close to it anymore, and since it looks like there's a new one nearby, I'll allow the spot to be taken by someone else. RIP IADT!

Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the West Hill Dam area in Uxbridge, MA. The terrain is fairly flat and family/dog friendly.

In August 1955, Hurricane Diane blew across Long Island Sound and hit the southern new England shore. The countryside had already been soaked by earlier storm when the hurricane dumped 12'-20" or rain from the Berkshires to the coast. Streams gushed and rivers jumped their banks, washing away bridges, roads, homes and businesses. Ninety people lost their lives and over $540 million worth of damage was done! On August 20, President Eisenhower declared many locations in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island as disaster areas.

This tragedy prompted state governments to work with the Corps of Engineers to hasten the building of several flood control dams that had already been authorized by the U.S. Congress. West Hill Dam, built from 1959-1961, is part of the resulting network of flood control structures. The dam is designed to hold back flood waters during heavy rains, until rivers begin to recede and the stored water can be safely released. West Hill protects Uxbridge, Woonsocket, Providence and other communities along the Blackstone River in Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

I figured it was about (dam) time to hide my first cache, since I'm approaching my 100th cache. I've coming hiking through this area to other caches in the West Hill Park, so thought it would be good to hide one here.

The cache is a clear plastic Lok-n-Lok approximately 0.5 miles from the parking area off East Hartford Ave in Uxbridge. It is on the non-flooding side of the dam, so should be flood proof

Enjoy!
