Geocache Description:

History Happened Here – “Above, The Law” 1854. Another cache celebrating our not so distant past.

Thanks TChas for cache maintenance, Spring 2012!

The Gold Rush was still on and there needed to be a place for law and order to be conducted. Since 1854, there have been five courthouses in Shasta County and this hilly spot above the main street in Shasta was where justice was dispensed. A log building, 20x28 ft and two stories tall sat here and held a courtroom and office on the ground floor and two iron walled cells on the second floor. The building was converted to a school in 1861.

I discovered this spot when son Distopher helped fellow scouts build a structure at this site in the late 90’s, 19-90’s that is.

The street is narrow and since parking may block the road, I’d suggest stopping down the hill. Best place to park might be in front of the Bakery on Highway 299, just down the hill.

Disguised Tang Container. This cache was replaced 11-3-06. It is not on or under the platform. More like 30 feet "Above". Please tuck it back in it's spot.

Carpe Diem, Carpe Geocachiem. . .MtnMike
