Geocache Description:

Due to recent vandalism at the memorial, the memorial is temporarily closed. “It was mutually agreed that the memorial and its surrounds will remain out of bounds for all until such time as the terrain can be properly secured. In the interim, the SAAF will continue to co-ordinate and oversee the repair and complete renovation of the memorial,” Louw informed SAAFA members.

The given coordinates will take you near the vicity of the South African AirForce Memorial near Zwartkop Air Base. The gate is usually open between 7:30am and 3:30pm weekdays and between 8:00am and 4:00pm weekends. Entrance is at S25 47.735 E28 10.146.

The cache is a 2l icecream container hidden in a black plastic bag. The cache consists of :
log book + pen
Map of Paris
Wire-bead insect
Shoe care kit


This is a multi-stage cache consisting of three waypoints which will reveal the final coordinate to the cache. Please do not publish this final coordinate in your logs. The final coordinate is of the form:
S 25º 4a.bcd E 28º 1w.xyz
where a,b,c,d,w,x,y, and z need to be substituted by values found at clues 1, 2 and 3..


There are various granite blocks which have inscriptions on them of soldiers who died during various wars. Clues 1 and 2 are taken from these blocks and you will need to find the correct ones as there are several in the vicinity. Clue 3 is found by observing so details in the vicinity of the cache..

Clue #1 will reveal the values for a, b and c.
Clue #2 will reveal the values for d, w and x.
Clue #3 will reveal the values for y and z.


Clue #1:
Find a granite block with the following inscription:
“UNVEILED BY CHIEF OF THE AIR…….”


a = the day + the month – the last digit of the year, where day is 1-31, month is Jan = 1, Feb = 2, Mar = 3 etc.

b = the number of letter ‘B’s on the 4th line.

c = (the number of letters in the 2nd word of line 5) – (the number of letter ‘S’s in the 3rd line) – 5.

Clue #2:
Find a granite block with the following inscription :
“SOUTH AFRICAN AIR FORCE ROLL OF HONOUR”.

All the clues come from the section titled “PRE WORLD WAR II”

d = the day in February 1920.

w = the number of soldiers with the surname “Pienaar” – 1.
x = the number of soldiers with the surname “Herbst”.


Clue #3:
y = the number of floodlights around the memorial – 10.

z = the number of red lights on the memorial spires – 4.

That’s it. You should now have the final coordinate.
