The cache is very close to the Dyke Railway Trail which runs from Hangleton, on the edge of Hove, to Devil’s Dyke. The trail is designed for access on foot, by bike and by wheelchair, although access to the cache itself is not possible by wheelchair. It is also part of the Monarch’s Way.
There are several ways to approach the cache site, but we usually park at the Boundary Halt car park along the Devil’s Dyke Road out of Brighton (N 50° 52.155 W 000° 11.465).
The Railway Trail (as its name implies) follows part of the disused branch railway line that used to take visitors to Devil’s Dyke from Hove mainline station. The railway was opened in 1887 and a halt constructed in 1891 to serve Brighton & Hove Golf Club, which was the first course in Sussex and also opened in 1887.
The Dyke Railway was unfortunately closed for ever on 31 December 1938, after private cars and buses made it uneconomic.
There are informative notice boards on the site of the old halt (N 50° 52.067 W 000° 11.964) and at the Mile Oak end of the trail giving interesting details of the railway and its history.
The cache is a small plastic box which contains only a log book, pancil & pen. Please take care to replace it exactly where found
There are fine views of the South Downs and Brighton, Hove and Shoreham from this point. There are golf courses on both sides of the trail as well as quite a lot of traffic on the trail itself. Muggles may therefore be a problem. However, the cache site itself is not easily visible from the trail although you should not leave public access land.
