It is perfectly safe for most people to go to the cache and
search around the area. Beyond the cache, it is possible to go
closer to the river and look down to where the bridge was.
I recommend great caution if proceeding
beyond the cache site. This is a rugged area beside a
river which is unforgiving. At this point the river is very narrow
and therefore deep and swift.
If you get into the river here you won't get
out alive!
WARNINGS:
- BEWARE OF CLIFFS.
- THIS IS NOT A CACHE FOR CHILDREN TO VISIT
unless under very close supervision.
- KEEP OUT OF THE RIVER
- BEWARE OF ICE IN THE WINTER MAKING THE ROCKS
VERY SLIPPERY
I understand that the Maori regularly used this bridge.
Te Puhoi and his raiding party who had travelled down the length of
the South Island, crossed the river here on his way to attack the
Ngai Tahu near Mataura.
The cache is hidden at ground level and not visible from any
distance. It is a 1 litre camo painted snap lock container with
various trading items.
It is possible to drive to a parking area close to the cache,
however it is steep and gravel so leaving 2WD cars on the side of
the main road may be wise.
