Geocache Description:

The co-ordinates above are for PARKING. The cache is located right next to a public right of way, near the hamlet of St Winnow. Some rocky parts and a few stiles to cross, but clearly marked footpaths. Once you have the co-ords worked out it should be about 30 minutes there and back. (NOT recommended for night caching because the church door may be closed!)

St Winnow A tiny hamlet on the East bank of the river Fowey is a place of quiet and solitude and worthy of a visit. Set in a beautiful situation, the church stands on what was probably a 7th century Celtic monastery 500 years before the Conquest. It is mentioned in Domesday as San Winnuc and still has some remains of the Norman building. In the 15th century, the aisle and tower were added and the east windows are very good examples of glass craft and detail much of the dress of the period. St Winnow Church is well known for its bench ends, carved from around 15th to 17th century and still in excellent condition. There is a plaque commemorating 2 parishioners who fought in the Zulu Wars and there are a number of South African connections with the church. Some scenes from the BBC Poldark series were filmed here. Also at St Winnow a unique Farm Museum may be visited - opening times available from the Tourist Information in Lostwithiel. There are a few benches about to relax on and drink in the peace and quiet, or perhaps have a picnic. To get there take the road to Lerryn off the A390 in Lostwithiel. Then, off this road, take the signposted right turn to St Winnow. Park at about the given co-ords, at the end of the lane (you can go no further!). Go to the church and if you have the time, have a look around inside. It is an interesting and a peaceful place. You will need the answers to these two questions to be able to complete the final cache co-ordinates: 1. How many studs are there in the row, above the handle, across the main door to the church? (NOT ALL the rows, just the one) 2. How many spikes (that's SPIKES) are there in total along the top of the wrought iron church porch gates. Call the answer to number 1 X and the answer to number 2 Y Use your answers to work out these: a=X+Y-1 b=Y-2 c=X-Y-1 d=X-6 e=3X-1 f=Y-2 g=X-9 h=X-Y Then substitute your answers for the letters below to get the final cache co-ordinates: N50:a:bcd, W004:e:fgh Follow paths to the boatyard and then the waymarked footpath along the river shore to wander off to find the cache! Cache is very close to a public right of way, so please re-hide it carefully, thanks. No need to go down a very steep bank. The cache really is next to a public path and not in a dangerous location. You are looking for a small camo'd pot.
