We thought it was about time that Glasgow had its own Travel Bug Motel, so here it is.
I wanted to get this as close to the airport as possible but somehow I seemed to end up closer to the river. If you’re coming along the M8 from Glasgow get off at J26 or from the other direction get off at J29. There’s a suitable parking spot at the NE end of the runway, presumably used by the anoraks! Actually it was fun to sit there in the dark and watch the planes taking off. Coordinates are N55° 53.020’ W04° 24.810’. Coming from the East you cross a swing bridge, not swinging sideyways but ‘rolling’ up on it’s end, it would be good to watch it in action.
You can actually drive quite a bit further up the lane marked Portnauld towards the waterworks but the parking places are very limited. We went along late in the evening and got all the way up to the waterworks but parked in front of a farm gate, which you wouldn’t do during the day of course.
This is a bit of a muddy farm path but we found firm ground most of the way towards the river. It’s not the nicest of locations but you get some interesting views that you wouldn’t normally get in Glasgow. You are opposite Clydebank and there’s one large crane left. The old John Brown factory was taken down recently. You can see the Erskine Bridge to the NW and for the shopaholics amongst you, Braehead along the other way.
You’re aiming for a fairly obvious feature; it’s marked on the wrong side of the little ‘creek’ on my OS map. The riverbank here is quite high and it would be hard to believe that the level could reach the height of the cache but there is lots of 'driftwood' nearby.
Apologies to all the owners of the TB’s that I’ve had too long whilst stockpiling to set up this cache. There are no normal swaps in this cache, to leave space for TB’s. I have placed a few zip-lock bags in the container in case it starts to get damp and any bugs need the protection. I have made sure that every bug has a mission tag on it. If you can do the same when placing a bug in the TB Motel then it will help people who might want to pick them up.
You lot on your way to Bute for the weekend, feel free to take these bugs but at least return some of them on the way back!
