Geocache Description:

Large Ammo container. Slightly off trail, should be hidden well, and up off the ground to allow for winter caching. Foot traffic during daylight hours only.

This cache is a memorial to Ada Marie McDowell who passed away July 28th, 2003. Ada often came to this beach to collect rocks for their rock shop which was located a mile south from here on highway M-31. The rock shop no longer exists but was well known by area residents during the 1970's and 1980's. Ada would occasionally bring her children, grand-children, and great-grandchildren to this beach to show them rocks to pick. After Ada passed away, and to this very day, her descendants continue to stop by here on their way to visit her gravesite. This locale has become known to them as "Grandma's Beach". This beach is abundant in the most popular Michigan stones, our state stone, the "Petoskey". We have placed in this cache a few of them so that you will know what they look like. Try your hand at finding a few Petoskey stones, and place one of them inside the cache. Or if you are not able to find one, take one from the cache and replace it with any other beautiful stone. Of course, if the weather is inclement, feel free to place any item of your choice in the petoskey's place instead. The original cache holds 15 Petoskey Stones, as well as 15 Coral Fossil Stones which are also abundant on this beach. There is a special first finder treat inside also. Good Luck...Ken and Carol of team "geoJockey"

___________________The Petoskey Stone_____________________
The Petoskey Stone is most unique in its composition and
origin. It is composed of the fossilized skeletons of
colony coral (hexagonaria) who lived their life span in
the warm sea waters that covered Michigan during the
Devonian Period some 350 million years ago. Each small
hexagonal chamber of this unique stone is a section
containing the prehistoric remains of a salt-water marine
life. The Petoskey Stone is found only in the northern
part of the lower peninsula of Michigan.
