This is the second cache placed in the far away Siwa Oasis for interested Geocachers passing by the Oasis lying 750 Km away from Cairo. The cache is situated only 4 km away from the city of Siwa, the terrain is not that difficult, but actually unearthing the cache is not the easiest. You need a 4X4 to reach the place near the quarry. Apparently it’s a popular camping area.
Background on Siwa Oasis Location: The oasis of Siwa is located in the northwest part of the Egyptian Western Desert, at about 750 km from Cairo and 300 km from the Mediterranean coast. The Oasis has a length of 75 km from east to west, a width between 5-25 km and it is located in a depression starting at sea level and reaching 20 m below sea level. Population: The total population is about 20,000 in Siwa. The local inhabitants are from a Berber origin, who speak Amazighy and not Arabic as their mother tongue. The social organisation is based on a tribal system, each tribe counting on a Sheikh elected by consensus of all households. To date the Oasis still retains its traditional way of life with women totally isolated from basic functions. They still have their special wedding traditions, handicrafts and architecture. Their houses are made from a mud salt combination called Karsheef, just like the old fort city Shali, that was molten down by heavy rains. Alexander the great and Queen Cleopatra both travelled to this isolated place for the consultation of the Oracle and now you can see the Temple of Alexander, the Temple of the Oracle and Cleopatra’s spring keeping their memory in the Oasis.
