Geocache Description:

Pex is an old quarry that owes some of it's character to the fact the quarry can get a bit damp in winter and gnat infested in summer but that just adds to the fun of it all. It's an interesting place with some serious rock climbs. Sandstone had been quarried here since the 16th century, though it has been disused for over 100 years.

To get to Pex Hill Take junction 6 on M62 and follow the A5080 to Cronton. Go straight through the village. About 1km there is a sixth form college on the right and some old green gateposts can be see on the left. Go up the track between these to parking at the top of the track. Exit car park via pedestrian gate and walk downhill and rightwards until the railings surrounding the quarry can be seen.

Start at the car park at the top of Pex Hill by the Liverpool Astronomical Society's observatory, marked on the OS map as a visitor centre (now closed). The view from here 230 ft (70 m) up is extensive, from the Widnes-Runcorn bridge on the left to Liverpool on the right via an array of Welsh mountains including, in clear conditions, the Berwyn and Clwydian Ranges, and Snowdon, the Glyders, Tryfan and the Carneddau of Snowdonia. Access is on well made paths, ( sometimes muddy in places ) and stiles thru a small wooded area, there are a set of sandstone stairs leading down into the quarry and the top of the quarry is well fenced off.

Numerous readings were taken at the cache site and the best/closest has been given but due to the nature of the location, a spoiler picture has been included just in case the sandstone walls affect the accuracy of your GPSR unit. The difficulty rating has reflected this....

Can get very busy on sunny days/school holidays/early evenings and is sometimes used by rock climbers.

Please be aware that this is an old quarry and that there are quite high drops on some sides but there is a set of sandstone stairs which is the safest/only way to enter !
