Geocache Description:

Take Exit 17A off Hwy 103 to Port Medway, then right onto the Long Cove Road which is gravel for the last 3 of its 5 km. Parking is about 4 km from Port Medway, past the lighthouse at N44. 06.123, W064.32.438.

In the 1800s Port Medway was second only to Yarmouth in importance as a shipbuilding and trading port on the South Shore. Lumber and fish were carried to ports north, east and south. As many as fifteen square riggers would set sail from "Port" on a good wind. Women often waited years to see their men and boys again, or to learn of their loss to a cruel sea or tropical disease.

From the parking area just up the hill from the lighthouse (unless the fog is in), there is a commanding view of the treacherous entrance to this fine harbour. Frying Pan, Toby's, Middle and Great Islands guard its eastern entrance, and Admiralty Head where you are standing, juts out from the West. A lighthouse was first built on Admiralty Head in 1850 and the light has been maintained ever since. Imagine the relief of seeing the light of your home port after an absence of two or three years.

A kilometer further up the road is Long Cove, home to a small lobster fishing fleet and a cluster of rustic 'camps'.

To the cache... from the parking area, a trail has been worn through the cranberry bog and along the rock ledge toward the lighthouse. The cache is a camouflaged plastic container filled with a variety of spoils.

Warning: Drive slowly along the narrow road and be prepared to yield to vehicles you meet. At the cache site, follow the trail and stay well back from the edge of the sea. Waves here are erratic and we don't want any wanderers lost!
