Chuck Walla: Greetings from Geocaching.com!

Since you have not responded to my reviewer log about your cache, the cache has been archived.

Some time ago, I posted a note to your cache page requesting a response from you to post what you were planning to do with the cache on the page and to send me a note. I have no record of a response, and no response tells me that you are not planning on replacing or repairing this cache. If I am wrong with that assumption, please let me know promptly. I can always unarchive the cache for you if needed.

Sincerely,

Geocache Description:

This is a relatively easy multi-cache, perfect for families and children. There are two micro-caches leading to a traditional cache. Use your GPS to find the first micro-cache, which will lead you in the general direction of the second cache, and provide a “riddle” clue to its specific location. (Your GPS compass or a traditional compass will lead you in the proper direction). The second micro-cache will provide GPS coordinates for the final cache.

This Geocache is located on the grounds of the historic old Mount Comfort Presbyterian Church, founded in 1828, the same year Andrew Jackson was elected President. This Geocache sits on an amazingly historic site: Only a few years after the church’s founding, the Cherokee Trail Of Tears passed through this area, and the church was on the main route. Some of the tired and ill Cherokee who could not make it into Oklahoma settled here, and their descendants remain in the area. Prior to the Civil War, a Women’s Seminary was established on this site.

During the Civil War, Mt. Comfort was an important waypoint for the Union and Confederate armies as they traveled to the battles at Wilson’s Creek (Springfield, Mo), Fayetteville, Pea Ridge, and Prairie Grove. The Mt. Comfort School/Church served as a hospital for wounded soldiers retreating from the Battle of Priaire Grove. The country school here continued in operation until well into the mid-twentieth century. Archeological digs here have turned up many interesting Civil War and school related artifacts from the period. Scenes from the epic film “The Blue and the Gray” were filmed on site here.

Today Mount Comfort is a thriving, growing church, the oldest Presbyterian church in Arkansas, where visitors join members each Sunday to worship in this historic church. You will enjoy Geocaching this site, and learn a little local history in the process. Enjoy the treasure when you find it!!!

This Geocache is dedicated in memory of Dr. Steve “PiperW” Wilson.
Doc Steve was not only a brilliant and caring physician of the body, but of the heart, mind, and soul as well. He was also a licensed pilot, a bagpiper and incredibly multi-talented musician, a science fiction writer and historian, an ice cream enthusiast published in the Guinness Book of World Records… and the list goes on. He certainly possessed many other talents that we never had the time to discover. Doc Steve, even in his final days on this earth, gave all glory and thanks to God for his life. He was a beloved friend of many in this community and is greatly missed.
