Geocache Description:

Easy parking at the pass. A fairly steep climb to top of mesa, following a "Donkey trail". Beautiful Tri-state view at top.

In 1851, Lt Sitgreaves was surveying a way over the Black Mtn's for the US Army. He crossed over the Mtn's at what is now called Union Pass, the Hwy 68 route. In 1858, another Army surveyor, Lt Ives, thought he was following the same route as Sitgreaves and when he reached this pass, Ives mistakenly named it after Lt Sitgreaves. Sitgreaves Pass is the route the 1st wagon train traveled, heading west out of Albuquerque, NM, instead of using the usual southern route through Yuma, because of recent attack's by Apache Indians. Following the Beale Wagon Road, towards the Colorado River, there journey met with disaster. Attacked by Mojave Indians at the river, eight member's were killed and over a dozen were wounded. They retreated over this pass, back towards Albuquerque, NM and soon ran out of food and water. After eating their livestock, including horse's and mule's, the survivor's were finally rescued by another wagon train. Hearing of the trouble they had encountered at the river, both groups returned to New Mexico. This incident convinced the Army to put a fort at the river, which became Fort Mohave. The fort protected Beale's River Crossing, providing a safe passage across the river to California. The cache is a plastic container, filled with fun stuff and a FTF Fiver,(aka DCF).
