Geocache Description:

London's little known Coal Posts were erected in the 19th Century and form a ring around London, indicating the Corporation of London's right of 'metage' of coal and other commodities. The Posts follow London's 1861 boundaries, and can be found alongside roads, railways...and rivers.

[NB This cache was relocated (about 100m) on 9 April 2009 - see log - so if you have been here before, feel free to find it again]

To find out more about Coal Posts there's a good summary on the City Of London website.  For everything you ever wanted to know on the subject, try Roger Howarth's comprehensive site. If you are intrigued, there are also some more details - including locations of other nearby coal-posts - on a note inside the cache itself.

Back to the cache: The co-ordinates given for Coal Post #97, which sits on the south bank of the Thames opposite Sunbury. You'll know it when you see it.

The cache itself is about 10 minutes walk from the post, along the beautiful River Thames

The view across the river, not far from the Cache.

So, once you've found Coal Post 97 check the inscription on the front, it starts with two numbers, A & B

Take A, multiply by 8 and add 6. This gives you a three digit number: XXX
Take B, multiply by 47. This gives you a three digit number: YYY

The cache is about 1km away from the post at
N 51 24.XXX
W 000 24.YYY

This isn't the only cache based around a Coal Post - indeed this wasn't even my idea, and I hope that SteveB67 and the Two Victorian Gentleman don't mind me borrowing their idea, and, along with Merstham Mafia, extending their excellent series

News: in 2007 this cache was featured in the New Statesman New Media Awards Weblog :-)
