This is a multi-cache around an area of Truro. Varied terrain and a
total walk of about 5km. Street parking available in various nearby
locations.
In order to find this cache you will have to visit a set of
locations and obtain a piece of information from each one. The
numbers you gather are used later to work out the coordinates of
the cache.
There are a couple of tradional micro caches along the way to look
for too, so keep your eye out for those!
Start at N50 15.915 / W005 03.484. (These are the
coordinates listed above for this cache.) These coordinates are in
Victoria Gardens, created to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond
Jubilee. The gardens are only open during daylight hours. The gates
are supposed to be locked at 19:30 each day, but this can be
earlier.
Take some time to have a look around while you're here, the gardens
aren't that big but they are beautiful. Anyway, you will find a
place to sit at the coordinates, in what year was the bench
presented to Truro City Council? The last digit of the year is
A.
Near here is my micro cache -
Truro Viaduct.
Leave the gardens enjoying the under-viaduct view along the way.
This granite and brick viaduct was built in 1904 and the separate
pillars you can see belonged to the viaduct's predecessor which was
built in 1859 by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and had a wooden structure
on top. Go up hill to the entrance to the cemetary at N50 15.962
/ W005 03.480. On the wall by the gate is a plaque telling you
that the gates were given in memory of William Eathorne. In what
year did he die? The last digit of the year is B.
Walk up through the cemetary to exit at the NW end. As you proceed
up the cemetary, turn around and enjoy the view across Truro. The
exit comes out right onto a busy road so take care as you go. Cross
the road to the pavement side. Walk up the road to N50 16.076 /
W005 03.543. On the wall is a set of initials and a date. The
last digit of the year is C.
Carry on up the road and walk up the path signposted to Kenwyn
Church. At N50 16.227 / W005 03.686 on this path is the
start of a triangle of paths. The other end of this triangle is at
N50 16.240 / W005 03.691. Count the links of chain along the
main path between these coordinates. The second digit (of however
many digits there are) of the answer is D. (This
number is big, seems like a conundrum, but there is a
trick to getting it right.) Whilst here, walk a little way
down the triangle and enjoy a view of the viaduct and Truro.
Near here is my micro cache -
Chainfields.
Once you reach the top of the path, cross the road and enter the
grounds of Kenwyn Church, Truro's oldest church which dates back to
the 13th Century (although now with many later alterations and
repairs!). At N50 16.333 / W005 03.680 there is a memorial
to Agnes Jennoy who died on the 30th Day of March in which year?
The last digit of the year is E.
Leave the Church grounds and head SW along Kenwyn Church Road. When
this road joins the main road you will need to cross over to
continue the walk down Comprigney Hill. Take care crossing over,
the road is busy. Continue down the hill to N50 16.062 / W005
03.874 where there is the start of a footpath. There is a
wooden marker post here with a name vertically engraved into it.
The number of letters in this name is F. Make sure you count
the letter that is partially hidden under the small CCC sign.
Follow the footpath to it's other end at N50 16.346 / W005
04.576. The footpath follows the river Kenwyn upstream. Along
the way enjoy the views back towards Truro. At the coordinates you
should have been able to find another wooden marker post, but it's
gone missing. If it ever gets replaced then G is the number
of letters in the first word. Until then, there are two kissing
gates with a fence on one side between them. Count the upright
posts holding the fence and also the two holding the swinging
gates. Divide this number by two and this is G.
Walk down the hill and turn left at the road junction. Cross the
ford and head up the hill to N50 16.194 / W005 04.685. This
is the start of another footpath with another wooden marker post.
The number of letters in the name is H. Unfortunately the
sign has become broken and currently lies on the ground. If you
arrive here and it is gone then you can get the number you need by
walking 10 to 15 metres up the hill and looking for a wooden gate
on the same side of the road as the footpath. Count the number of
metal bolts that hold the two cross members. Deduct 1 from this
number and you will have H.
Follow the footpath up the hill to the other end at N50 16.090 /
W005 04.459. Along the way enjoy the views of Truro and the
viaduct. Once again count the number of letters in the name on the
post. This number is J. There are two words in the name,
count the letters from both.
Follow the road down, past some houses and around the corner. Just
past the last house is a footpath on the right, up into the
woodland. Climb up the steps in the wall and follow the path to the
top at N50 15.979 / W005 04.108. There is a style here. Go
over it and enjoy the view of the viaduct. Near the style is a
Council sign advising you to Keep Carrick Clean. On this sign is a
phone number, the last digit of which is K.
You should now have all the information you need to find the cache.
First complete these simple sums to work out four new numbers:
L = J - F
M = D - E
N = C - A
P = H - C
R = G - A
The cache is at N50 KB.HFC / W005 EL.NPR. Cross the style
again and follow your GPSr to the cache. Due to the trees you may
have trouble with the signal a bit so use the hint to help you
locate it.
After you've found the cache you can go back down to the road and
follow it SE. When the road joins another, follow this downhill and
to the right and walk back towards the starting coordinates. Enjoy
the view of the viaduct along the way.
I hope you enjoyed the walk (and the views!).
