Geocache Description:

Posted coordinates are not for the cache, but rather for the parking area. The cache is about 300 feet from the parking area and 50-100 feet higher than the parking area. Because this is not a developed trailhead, a Northwest Forest Pass is NOT required. You are looking for a Decon Container.

I tried to go after Rock of Ages, The road Less Traveled, and Sky High, but found that the roads are all still gated. Never one to let myself get discouraged, I decided to plant a cache near the gates. The cache is near one of the many sandstone formations characteristic of the location. Because of the trees and the depth of the canyon, reception isn’t great. To establish the coordinates of the cache, I took the average of 3 readings, turning off my GPS between readings and giving it time to acquire the satellites. Each of the readings was taken with only 48 foot accuracy according to the GPS. There was a spread of 5/1000 of a minute between latitude readings and 4/1000 of a minute between longitude readings.

To find the cache, figure out how big your search area would be if your GPS showed accuracy radius of 9 feet (best reception I’ve ever seen.) Next calculate how big your search area would be if your GPS showed an accuracy radius of 48 feet as it was at the time I hid it. Subtract the smaller area from the bigger area.

11706.14657-difference in the search areas = Latitude.

Now figure out the difference in the circumference you would need to walk if you were to walk around both search areas.
12273.40802 – difference in search circumferences = Longitude.

For my calculation, I rounded Pi to the nearest hundred thousandth. In other words: 3.14159
