Local legend tells of a trial of strength between two giants (who obviously hadn’t discovered the delights of geocaching) and decided to see who could throw their stone the furthest. The first giant stood on Carnock and threw his stone to the base of the Neilston Pad, a distance of about a mile and a half. The other giant, not to be out done, walked to the summit of the pad and threw his stone with such force that it cleared the Craig of Carnock where it remains to this day. We prefer geocaching, ourselves. The Pad provides open views of the local countryside. To the north and east is the interesting, to a Glaswegian, view of Glasgow and the Clyde valley. To the southeast the expanse of Ayrshire opens up, apparently on a clear day you can see the Ailsa Craig (we can’t verify that one). Looking south you can see the Mearns Moor with the occasional farmhouse and loch. There is parking at N55°45.526, W4°26.174 Thanks to Sam - our Neilston connection.
