Geocache Description:

A standard cache hidden in Northwood

Northwood Golf Club was founded in 1891, as a nine hole course on land known locally as "The Gravel Pits". This land had been excavated by a local brick works covering some 30 acres, and despite the name was considered a local beauty spot, with a variety of trees, dips and hollows, natural white sand gulleys, grassy walks, thickets and hilly dells. It was a man-made wonderland because of the excavations and when three golfing enthusiasts stopped their horse-drawn carriage to view the scene they excitedly talked about the possibility of turning it into a
golf course. Well it didn't take them long to set about making their dream come true and Northwood Golf Course (which can be seen across Copse Wood Road) was formed.

Over the years the club has expanded and it now has a thriving membership of around 800. The Par 71, 6553 yard course is regarded as one of the most testing of courses in Middlesex. Among the many famous golfers who have played at Northwood are Bobby Locke and Tony Jacklin.

Today, all that is left of the gravel pits is the small wooded area in which the cache is hidden.

Plenty of parking is available in the nearby resisential streets.
