Sheffield Flood Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: This cache has been in need of care and maintenance for some time and as the owner has not responded to my note I am archiving it.

Guidelines:**You are responsible for occasional visits to your cache to maintain proper working order, especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to search for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable amount of time - normally a few weeks - in which to check on your cache. If a cache is not being maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an unreasonable length of time, we may archive the listing.**

If you wish to contact me about this cache please use my Email address below my signature and quote the GC number of the cache. Please note this system is not infallible and I may miss any such mail.

Many thanks,

Geocache Description:

The co-ords are not for the cache but a local hostelry that has a lot of history tied up within its walls. Call in to see some remarkable pictures and interesting facts about the flood. The cache is a 2lt container with the usual bits and bobs in it. Suggest boots for this walk especially after heavy rain! Should take about 20mins each way depending on route taken including solving the clues.

This multi cache requires you to do a little bit of research before finding the cache. You will need to use the Internet to obtain the starting point co-ordinates and then work out the co-ordinates of the actual cache itself using the clues from the starting point.

The Sheffield Flood.
Despite being one of the biggest man-made disasters in British history, and now being annually recorded in the Guinness Book of Records, few people today - even in Sheffield - know a great deal, if anything at all, about the flood. Hopefully you will be a little wiser about it by the time you have finished!

The Dale Dyke Dam (Bradfield) burst in 1864, which directly killed approximately 250 people in an area that stretched from the Dam to Sheffield town centre, a distance of about 12 miles. That night 700 million gallons of water poured down this valley wiping out just about everything in its path.

This walk will take you on part of the route the water followed on that fateful night.

You need to find out from the archives the following claims information to obtain your starting position; The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded £49,300 towards the cost of making the Sheffield Flood Claims Archive accessible via the Web. The Claims date from 1865 and are for loss of property and livelihood, and for injury and/or death of a relative. They form a uniquely comprehensive snapshot of a major industrial centre in the mid-Victorian period. The Claims are rich in the minutiae of everyday-life, mainly of the poorer classes, whilst also providing extensive information about commercial and industrial enterprises. There are about 7,500 claims recorded in total, and they are currently viewable only in the original documents, or on microfilm (though not all the books have been filmed). This claim is available on line and the claim number 4064 is a Mr Edward Houseley you need the particular payouts of the damages claimed to get your start co-ords;
