Geocache Description:

Good half mile hike in. Mostly flat terrain. Cactus and choilla, but there is an easy trail from the North East that avoids most of these prickleys. Young kids will likely have to be carried part way if they get tired. Decrypt the hints for the best parking and trailhead.

As folks hurry along Houghton road most don't realize they are passing the site of the old AHRA Drag stip. This was a common weekend pasttime for folks as far back as 1964 until a man by the name of Gerrald Johns bought the track and ran it to the ground. He lost his lease to this State Trust Land when he was caught using it as an air strip to smuggle in drugs. The track closed in 1985 just after the 1985 AHRA winter nationals.

The cache is a small metal tin covered with rocks and we encourage you to leave stuff with an automotive / drag theme.

When you find this cache, make sure you walk out on the remains of the drag strip itself about 10 meters west of the cash. You may even still see the grocery cart someone ported in there.

Although this area is fenced, you do not have to cross any fences to get to it. In fact, there are cow trails and old dirt roads (inaccessible and unauthorized to motorized vehicles) leading to within 35 meters. With cow trails come cows including a rather proud bull, so be on the lookout.

This is State Trust Land and officially requires a permit to access (as do many other caches in the area: Poorman's Road, Tour of Fantasy Island, etc.). Go to the Arizona State Land Department web site for more about getting a permit:
