Devil on Horseback Traditional Cache
stutefish2: Sadly I think the time has come to archive this cache. We adopted it from its original owners when they moved away, and have tried to keep it maintained, but unfortunately it has started to be muggled and we aren't able to visit as often as we would like to keep it in perfect condition. Recommended parking at the Offa’s Dyke Visitor/Information Centre in Knighton at N 52° 20.781 W 003° 03.110
If you have time to have a look inside the Visitor Centre try and pick yourself up a “Kinsley Wood” leaflet which happens to contain a map of the various paths to the cache site. There are several routes to the cache site, and some are very steep.
Please note: you will be able to follow proper paths all the way to the cache site apart from the last 10 metres where you leave the path momentarily.
There is a second parking area – you would access this from the A488 and go up the track near N 52° 20.863 W 003° 01.881 - follow the track to the top (there is a fork to the right at one point, ignore this). The scenery enjoyed from approaching the cache is still wonderful from this side of the hill but you miss out on the pretty river valley down by the Visitor Centre. It also is a more sedate trip from this car park.
The whole trip will take about 1 hour at least if you park at the Visitor Centre. There are several picnic/viewpoints, so you could tie in your visit with a picnic stop.
From the Visitor Centre, when you reach the river follow it UPSTREAM to the two bridges. When you have crossed the footbridge you will immediately come to cross a single track railway line - PLEASE KEEP A WATCH FOR TRAINS AND KEEP YOUR GEOKIDS UNDER TIGHT REIN HERE.
Back in Tudor times the woods were said to be the haunts of bandits. And if you should come along after dark beware sightings of a hooded figure – as one of the tracks out of the hill was where there was a sighting of the Devil on Horseback, riding from Kinsley Wood who then disappeared from view into the fields.
