Geocache Description:

This cache is located at the Westbound I-80 rest area east of Grand Island Ne. You are looking for a small tupperware conatiner. Bring your own writing utensil.

If you are visiting this cache there is a good chance that you are just "passing through". You are in good company, as you proceed west you will enter the Platte river valley, also known as the Great Platte River Road. The Morman trail was to the north, the Oregon and California trails to the south.The trails coverged west of here, near historic Ft. Kearny, to form one of the most traveled portions of the west. The trails split again where the North and South Platte rivers converge, the Oregon trail following the North Platte river past Ash Hollow, Chimney Rock and Scottsbluff. The gold seekers of the Colorado gold rush followed the South Platte to the gold fields of Colorado. The pioneers were folllowed by the Pony Express, the Overland Stage lines, the first Trans-continental railroad, the Lincoln Highway and the pipeline of people that is I-80. You are walking in footsteps of historic proportions. So stop, stretch your legs, gaze at the endless sky above you and consider the history surrounding you. As you travel west, you might want to stop along the way. Historic Ft. Kearny is just down the road. The Great Platte River Archway Monument is a educational experience on just this subject (trust me, you can't miss it). Further down the road you will find the largest rail yard in existance at North Platte. If you get off the beaten path you can visit Ash Hollow, Chimney rock and Scottsbluff where you can walk in the ruts the wagons left.
