Geocache Description:

This traditional geocache simulates the first part of the famous Edgar Allan Poe short story, "The Gold Bug". It contains a clue you will need to find “GB2 – The Gold Bug 2” (the final cache in this two cache series).

Just over 150 years ago, Edgar Allan Poe wrote a short story (entitled “The Gold Bug”) which not only established his stature as a literary genius, but also became what is arguably one of the earliest recorded accounts of a geocaching hunt! The two part “Gold Bug” series caches are dedicated to that story, and your hunt for them will lead you to recreate much of Poe's "The Gold Bug" story.

Suggested, but certainly not required to find this first cache, is a familiarity with the story itself. "The Gold Bug" may be found at any library in a collection of Edgar Allan Poe's writings, or online. You certainly don't have to read the story to find this cache, but it's an excellent and entertaining tale with special appeal for geocachers, and will greatly enhance your hunting enjoyment.

This cache is easy to locate; and after doing so you are welcome to log a “Find” online and end your adventure if you wish. If you decide to continue on to hunt the second (and final) cache in this series, be sure to take one of the clues that you'll find in the container here, since that clue is required to find the final “GB2 – The Gold Bug 2” cache. There is limited room in the container for other items; feel free to trade trinkets but remember that isn’t the primary purpose of this geocache. This one is all about the adventure!
