St. Peter’s First
The church of San Piero a Grado, near Pisa, is placed where was a port at the old mouth of river Arno about 2.000 years ago, the sea is now 6 km west, at Marina di Pisa and the tradition wants that the Basilica arises exactly where St. Peter disembarked coming from Palestine, on the way to Rome.
The church had several restores, the actual shape is of the rebuilding of X – XI century, on the foundations of precedent churches of IV and VI century as recent excavations have revealed, you can see them inside the church. As result of such remakes the actual basilica has no façade, but two apses! The entrance is in the middle of north side. In the church are paintings representing the portrait of all the Pontiffs from St. Peter until the year 1000 (exactly 1009 with the Pope John XVIII). The access to the church is free. In the walls of the church are enclosed several stones of roman age, coming maybe from destroyed temples or buildings.
La chiesa di San Piero a Grado, vicino a Pisa, è situata nel luogo in cui si trovava il porto alla foce dell’Arno circa 2.000 anni fa, ora il mare è a 6 km a ovest, a Marina di Pisa, e la tradizione vuole che la Basilica sorga esattamente dove San Pietro sbarcò venendo dalla Palestina, sulla via di Roma.
La chiesa ha subito diverse modifiche, le forme attuali risalgono al rifacimento del X – XI secolo, sulle fondamenta di precedenti chiese del IV e VI secolo come hanno rivelato scavi recenti che potete vedere all’interno della chiesa. Come risultato dei diversi rifacimenti, la chiesa attuale non ha facciata, ma due absidi! L’ingresso è a metà del lato nord. Nell’interno della chiesa ci sono i dipinti raffiguranti i ritratti dei Pontefici da San Pietro all’anno 1000 (esattamente 1009 col Papa Giovanni XVIII). L’accesso alla chiesa è libero. Nelle mura della chiesa sono inglobate diverse pietre di età romana, provenienti probabilmente da costruzioni o templi distrutti.
