The above co-ordinates relate to a micro cache ( 35 mm film canister with a geocache sticker ) which contains the co-ordinates for the main cache. This micro is situated in the vicinity of Stockwell Common.
Recommended car parking is at N51.56.494 W002.01.348 which affords excellent views over the Severn Vale, situated as it is, high on the Cotswold Escarpment ( 728 feet ).
Cleeve Common itself is a large area of limestone grassland on the Cotswold escarpment, most of which is an SSSI. There are panoramic views with Cleeve Cloud being the highest point in Gloucestershire at 1035 ft.
To the North West the Malvern Hills are easily seen, whilst the Forest of Dean is some 24 miles away and the Sugar Loaf Mountain near Abergavenny 45 miles in the distance are visible on a clear day.
The main cache is a 1 litre plastic “lunch” box with a green geocache sticker containing a log book pencil etc. plus a selection of the usual small items.
Notes:
1. The common is a public golf course so care should be exercised when crossing fairways etc.
2. In view of the terrain the use of buggies may prove difficult.
3. There are a number of old quarry workings on the Common which have unprotected, and in some cases, not easily seen edges. Geocachers with geokiddies need to exercise some care in this respect.
A visit to N 51.56.161 W 002.01.327 is well worth the detour either before or after visiting the cache.
