Contoocook Island River Park Cache
Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
Access to trails: From the center of Penacook, drive 0.6 miles on Washington Street to Electric Avenue on your right (the street sign has humor – take a good look at it). Take Electric Avenue 0.2 miles to a gate and parking area across the road. Cache is in a small lock and lock. Please rehide well (there can be dog-walking muggles around)! Enjoy all of the trails if you have time. It is a lovely area.
My grandparents lived across the river at 98 Washington Street. I used to walk these trails often with them – especially my grandmother. I still like to visit the area. My grandmother told me wonderful stories about the Contoocook Island Amusement Park. It was quite the spot in its heyday! This cache is dedicated to John and Olive LaValley, my paternal grandparents. Please watch children when near the river bank and steep cliff areas (the Palisades/the Bluffs). The river is not as deep as it was before the hydro dam was built but bodies of water should always be treated with respect especially in the spring. The Concord Conservation Commission has given me permission to place this cache. Please respect the park and be sure to Cache In and Carry Out. Thank you!
History (edited from the www.onconcord.com Web site): What now looks like just an old dirt road through the forest used to hold trolley car tracks. In the woods along the river was the much-loved Contoocook River Amusement Park. For twenty cents in 1893, and up until the 1920s, you could ride the trolley from downtown Concord to enjoy swimming, dancing, boating, roller-skating, bowling, fireworks, live theater, and even a steamboat ride up the Contoocook River. The park closed in 1925. Today the area is still popular with boaters and fishermen, but little trace of the park remains. If you follow the well-used trail along the banks of the river, into the woods, and beside the hydroelectric canal the shore remains a lovely place to walk, ski, or snowshoe.
