Shotts is situated half way between Glasgow and Edinburgh and was reputedly called "BERTRAM de SHOTTS" in the twelfth century, after a well known "robber" and "giant" of the name Bertram.
Legend says the giant was finally captured by the Laird of Muirhead. This Laird lay in wait at the giant's favourite drinking spot, where he jumped up out of hiding and killed Bertram. The reward for Bertram's demise was 'a Hawk's flight of land' as disposed by the King himself at the time, and was the foundation of the original boundaries of what was to be later known as Shotts.
The “Giant’s Cup and Saucer” or “Law's Castle” still lies on the Jersay Road to the West of Fortissat.
