Geocache Description:

Description by Original Owner – katooska: This cache is in a particularly tranquil section of the park. It is within strolling distance of a picnic area, a ballfield, a memorial fountain and a summer theatre. The sweetgum trees are beautiful with their five-pointed leaves. They drop many prickle balls.

The tree gets its name because hardened sap that flows from wounds in the bark "has long been used as a substitute for chewing gum in the South" (Petersen Field Guides, Edible Wild Plants). However, the many prickle balls are what make this site special. Children will enjoy playing with the prickle balls that cover the ground, and the kids can enjoy running on the grass while their parents search. The cache is a bison tube. There is only room for a log. Searchers should, therefore, bring their own pen or pencil. Enjoy.

Update 11/25 - In the 20 years this cache has been active, the area has changed. The concrete parking blocks have been removed and do not seem to be coming back anytime soon. Cache has now moved slightly.
