Geocache Description:

This cache is located along side of Lower Otay Lakes. It is located near a paved access. This site is flat and easy to get to. No bushwhacking required and for three days out of the week (Sat, Sun, Wed) you can drive on a bumpy paved road between sunrise and sunset to a spot very near to the cache site. At other times, the cache site will be a walk .48 in from the gate. This also could be a hydrocache.

This is a small green ammo box, sporting a geocaching sticker on the outside of the box. Travel Bugs are welcomed and encouraged to visit this cache.
This is the third incarnation of this cache. It has been burned out and flooded out. ‘Third time’s a charm”
History:
Construction of the dam at Lower Otay was completed in 1897 and formed the 3rd reservoir in 10 years built in the county. Unfortunately, an oversight proved devastating as the dam was built without a means for shedding excess water. In 1916 heavy rains filled the reservoir beyond capacity and overpowered the dam causing it to crumble and completely wash away. Construction of a new improved dam quickly followed and the reservoir was reestablished only 2 years later. In 1990 the U.S. Olympic Committee held an official groundbreaking at the future site of the ARCO Olympic Training Center adjacent to Lower Otay. The lake is now used as a training facility for US Olympic rowing teams and as a beautiful Geocache site.
