Cabin Fever Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

dentalstudent: The cache is .13 miles from the new logging road. It seems the logging activity will include the cache location. Teese grabbed this one off the mountain today. If the cabin survives and if this is still a cool cache hide location, I may replace or re-activate this cache. I hope you enjoyed it!

Geocache Description:

Sumas Mountain marks the east edge of northern Whatcom County's coastal plain and is visible to virtually all inhabitants. Few, however, are aware of the quaint log cabin perched halfway up its flank (48 55.142N; 122 14.904W). Although there is another [drier] approach, the traditional trailhead uses the "Gold Mine Trail" (48 55.209N; 122 15.926W).

Trailhead

The first 300 yards are EXTREMELY muddy – no matter what time of the year. One author (Wilcox: Hiking Whatcom County: Trail 52) suggests using rubber boots, then switching to hiking boots when you reach dry ground.

Once you've grabbed the cache and checked out the cabin, a short detour takes you to nearby Gold Digs, Fools Gold, and Gold Rush. These are 3 of [hopefully] an eventual 5 caches in Teese and dentalstudent’s “Gold Series.” Also consider summiting the mountain (~4.4 mi; el. 3430’) for a well-earned panorama from Bellingham to Abbotsford, BC and finding nearby Sumas Summit. For the crazy hiker, you could also find the trail that goes over the summit to Lost Lake.
