Geocache Description:

Ok so technically they are Peregrine Falcons and they live on the 15th floor of the Rachel Carson State Office Building in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

It all began in 1996, when a male peregrine was seen in Harrisburg. A nest tray was put in place and the following spring the male returned with a female peregrine. But they failed to produce eggs in both the 1997 and 1998 nesting seasons.

After careful consideration and under the direction of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the female was live captured on April 28, 1999 and within one week the male was seen with a new female. It was determined, by her banded, that the new female was too young to reproduce this season, but would be capable in 2000 when she would be a two-year-old.

The spring of 2000 brought great anticipation as the falcon pair exhibited all the behavioral characteristics associated with nesting peregrines and the first of four eggs was laid on March 27th.

Peregrine Falcons have an extremely high mortality rate; up to 80% through the first year of life. So of the four eggs laid in 2000, three birds lived to be banned while only one female fledgling* [code named (W/G)] survived to leave the nest. She was last spotted in June of 2001 in Northern New Jersey.

* 2000's sole fledgling (W/G) was first assumed to be a male when it was banded (based on it's size) but from behavioral observations in the following year it was reclassified as a female.
