How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Eckington: Hi, this looks like the cache needs some TLC. Could the owner please undertake a maintenance visit to check it out and replace any damaged items. In the meantime I'm archiving it but I'll happily unarchive it if/when it's sorted assuming it still meets the guidelines.

Thanks, Eckington (eckingtons31@tesco.net)

Geocache Description:

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

by the Hopping Rats

NOTE - THE CO-ORDINATES FOR THIS LISTING ARE FOR PARKING AND ARE NOT RELATED TO THE LOCATION OF THE CACHE

This cache marks the first event cache hosted by the Cache Hoppers and Ratty & Son (the Hopping Rats) and was released into the wild on the morning of the event.

Unlike some of our other caches, this one is far from a 'cache 'n' dash', so please expect to do a bit of walking. You will also need to bring a spanner (we can see that look from here) but this is covered below.

We hope you enjoy yourselves!

the Hopping Rats

On to the cache...

This one is situated in a lovely part of the area called Grazeley. It's an off-set affair, with a little twist. Well, a few twists actually. For a couple of the stages you will need a spanner. The size is 9/16ths, but a medium adjustable will do the trick.

You will be taken on a lovely walk up to a small old church, across a farmer's field and up a scenic road used largely for fly-tipping. Once passed this, it's back to the nice green footpaths again. The final cache is about a mile from the start, but bare in mind that's a mile back again!

Parking...

The co-ordinates for this listing are for suggested parking only. This is in fact a small pub, with big signs stating 'Patron Parking Only'. So, while the pub is open, we suggest you pop your car on the verge of the lane. But, it's up to you!

Terrain...

The terrain for this one is pretty flat, though during the wetter months this cache will get you not only muddy, but pretty wet too. We suggest you bring some spare footwear in the car! With that in mind, although there are no major obstacles, this is pretty much a no-go for buggies.

Also, while walking up the demilitarized zone, keep an eye on the kids - if one ends up with a head stuck in an old washing machine, who's gonna stay with them while you finish the cache?

Original contents...

At the start, the cache contained the following;

  • 1 pair of size 51/2 - 9 thermal socks

  • 1 pen torch

  • 3 red Cyalumes (glow sticks)

  • 2 packs of lithium batteries (4 pk)

  • 1 pack of crayons (24 pk)

  • 1 Thomas the Tank Engine 'Henry' book

  • Disposable camera (PLEASE TAKE YER SNAP THEN LEAVE BEHIND!)

  • Log book

Before you cache checklist...

Make sure you've got this lot before you start!

Let's get going...

Please follow these instructions carefully. A little hiccup could turn your 2 miles into 4!

To save time, you can download all the necessary waypoints in .loc format here.

  1. N51 23.877 W0 59.766  -  You are looking for a large magnet, so metal things are a good place to start! Note the 3 digit number. This will become NUMBER A

  2. N51 23.772 W1 00.219  -  Another large magnet with another 3 digit number. This will become NUMBER B

  3. N51 23.832 W1 00.460  -  You are looking for a sign with an emergency contact number at the bottom starting 0118 971. Note the last digit. This will become NUMBER C

  4. N51 23.857 W1 00.580  -  You are now looking for a silver bolt head. Using your spanner, undo it a few turns until a single digit number is revealed. This will become NUMBER D

  5. N51 23.788 W1 00.594  -  Another bolt head, and another concealed number. Again, a few turns then note the single digit number. This will become NUMBER E

NOTE THE NUMBERS IN THIS HANDY TABLE
NUMBER A
NUMBER B

NUMBER C
NUMBER D
NUMBER E

This is the equation for the first part, which will fill the blanks;

N51 23. _ _ _

B   - (  E  + ( D * 2 ))

     - (       + (    * 2 ))  =

Here's the equation for the second part, again fill in the blanks;

W001 00. _ _ _

(  A  * 4) + 94 *  C

(      * 4) + 94 *       =

You should now have the complete co-ordinates for the final location, which is a small ammo box.

Enjoy (your walk back to the car)!
