An ammo can, hidden off of the Landtrust Trail on Huntsville Mountain
When initially placed, this cache was 300 feet from the nearest trail. Now that the trail has been fully developed, the hiding spot is mere feet from the trail, so it is important that you place the cache back where it was hidden so it can't be seen from any angle.

Parking for this new trail is located at 34 40.400n 86 31.825w The Southeast Church of the Nazarene (2275 Cecil Ashburn Rd) has graciously agreed to allow hikers use their parking lot. Please return the favor by not leaving a mess behind. (For instance, if you get your shoes muddy don't scrape them off on the curb or parking lot, etc.)
In my opinion, this is the prettiest mountain trail in Huntsville. The trail winds up the mountain under a canopy of hardwood trees and weaves its way through large outcroppings of weathered limestone, crossing wet weather stream beds in several places. There are countless nooks and crannies along the trail, so consider bringing along a cache to hide.
The trail is a work in process. On April 16, 2005 the initial 2000 feet of trail was cleared and marked by volunteers. When you reach the current end of trail you can continue following the orange marker flags along the planned route of the trail for a good ways. Once the flags run out, it will be up to you to bushwhack the remaining distance to the cache.
As for the name of the cache, when I found a good hiding spot for the cache, I discovered that I was about a quarter mile due North of my house. The Granny Gear part of the name has nothing to do with bifocals, hot water bottles or prune juice. A granny gear is that low, low gear they used to put in old trucks for extra pulling power. Since there is a 400 foot elevation gain from the parking lot to the cache, you are going to need your “granny gear”. Prune juice is optional, but NOT advised, as you may find yourself stepping over fallen logs and other obstacles along the way.
The cache is well hidden from view, however it is not buried, it is not under a rock, it is not under a fallen tree, it does not have sticks piled on it like a campfire. It is not above your head, it is not hanging from anything. It is not covered with camo tape or leaves. It’s not in a stump. It is not between two rocks, it is not in a crack or crevice. It is not in an alternate time space continuum (this isn’t Star Trek, Erkel). Decrypt the hint if you must, but if you set your GPS down when you reach the area of the cache, and let it average for at least 5 minutes, it will point you at the only logical hiding spot.
