The Ghost of Peg O'Nell watches over this one, so never at night unless prepared for a fright, and even in the day from the path dont stray, for the dangers are WEIR'D !!
At the heart of the Ribble Valley and again by the banks of the Ribble, which offers some great walks and superb countryside views.
The site of this cache is steeped in mystery and folklore and was the "ephicentre" of all the ghostly activity that was filmed during Sky TV's Most Haunted series, halloween2004 !!! and the featured Peg 'O' Nell Well is visible from the opposite riverbank as this is the only one with public access, spooky at night but creepy still during the day.
Peg o’Nell’s ghost is said to haunt the banks of the river near Clitheroe. The legend says she was a servant at Waddow Hall in the 18th century - maybe earlier. Nobody is sure how she died, but the favourite theory is that she had a row with her employer - who sent her out to fetch water with the parting words: "… and I hope you break your neck". She was never seen again. Peg was said to demand a life every seven years - and if no animal drowned she’d take a human life. The custom of "Peg’s Night" started where an animal or bird was drowned to satisfy her ghost... Peg o’ Nell’s Well is on the river bank below Waddow Hall. It’s rectangular and shallow with a spring bubbling into it. At the side of the well is the stone statue of a woman in a flowing dress - but the statue is headless - which makes identification tricky.
The best place to park is on castle view in clitheroe at 53°52.463'N, 2°23.877'W and there are always loads of spaces. Once on the public footpath follow your GPS or map and prepare for the amazing site below you when you reach the brow of the hill !!!! There is a travel bug to start in this one, and he's destined for OZ we hope. A mobile phone, Metal Jet plane, toy soldier, etc and log book in a small plastic box.
