This cache is located on a private inholding within the Frederick Watershed, but outside the limits of nearby Gambrill State Park. A small parking lot is located nearby, at N39 29.505 W77 28.445. The lot is quite busy with visitors, esp. on weekends, so please be sure to park at one side of the tiny lot to leave room for other vehicles. Elevation is ~ 845 feet. Stealth is required due to frequent nearby hikers and wilderness visitors, etc.
If for some reason the small parking lot nearest the cache, listed above, is too crowded, or if you want a longer and more interesting hike to the cache, a larger trailhead parking lot for hikers/mountain bikers is located a bit to the southeast, at N39° 29.405 W77° 28.405 (this lot has been in existence for about 100 years!) If you choose to use this larger lot, be sure to park in the trailhead parking lot and NOT in any nearby driveways or parking areas of the two rural homes a bit further down the road! The entire area is policed by DNR, as is the entire watershed. Stealth is required as the site is visible, although at a great distance, from the nearby parking lot and road.
Original cache contents: 1) letter explaining geocaching, 2) log book, 3) windsock, 4) quartz crystal 5) polished gemstone, 6) rubber frog, 7) plastic snake and other fun things. Located in wilderness area: poisonous plants, thorns and briars, snakes, ticks, ants, lizards, fox, coyotes, bears, bobcats, cranky turtles and an occasional rabid groundhog or raccoon. Hunting allowed in season. Falling rocks. Rough terrain, sharp rocks. Steep slopes and falling rocks. Not wheelchair accessible. Trek not very kid-friendly, but possibly okay for some. Available 24/7 but not recommended at night. Legal parking available nearby. No fees. Some climbing/clambering. Some stealth required due to frequent nearby visitors to the spring. Camping and campfires not allowed. No telephone nearby. No camping. No rest facilities. Do not park in driveways of nearby rural homes. Have fun!
