Geocache Description:

This will be a series of caches highlighting the heritage of the I&M Canal. All caches will be accessible from the trail and access points along the trail. BYOP

The M.J. Hogan Grain Elevator is the earliest remaining grain elevator built along the Illinois & Michigan Canal. The elevator, constructed in 1861-1862 by John Armour, allowed local farmers to ship their grain in bulk to Chicago markets via the canal as opposed to transporting each load by horse and wagon.
The elevator had a 70,000 bushel capacity and could lift 3,000 bushels an hour. Farmers would pull their wagons onto a dumping ramp after being weighed. A hydraulic lift would lift the wagon and dump the grain down a funnel shaped bin. The grain would be lifted up in buckets attached to a conveyor belt to the top of the elevator and then distributed into storage bins by a movable spout. Canal barges would then pull along side the elevator and grain stored in the bins would be loaded into the barge using chutes. A spur line of the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific Railroad also provided service to this elevator and additional chutes were installed on the north side of the elevator to load rail cars.
The M.J. Hogan Grain Elevator came under the ownership of the Department of Natural Resources in 1975.
