The modern 4-H four-leaf clover logo was designed by
superintendent of schools O.H. Benson in the early 1900s, and
became an enduring national emblem. Clarion, Iowa is the location
of the historical schoolhouse where the emblem was created.
The site is now a seasonal museum complete with a plaque
engraved on a boulder. Mr. Benson suggested that the four H’s
stand for; Head, Heart Hands and Hustle. The colloquial
“Hustle” was later, in 1911, changed to
“Health” by O.B. Martin. Congress has twice passed
legislation since 1911 protecting the 4-H name and emblem.
