Geocache Description:

A Cacheapalooza

Come join us at Gateway Park in Fort Worth on Saturday, 21 May, for a fun afternoon! We will celebrate the sport of geocaching with games, new geocaches, chit-chat, and food.

Here is the "envisioned" timeline...

3pm - Event starts. Folks arrive.
4ish - The Rock, Paper, Scissors game begins.
5:30 to 6ish - The Rock, Paper, Scissors game ends.
6 to almost dark - Other caching games and stuff.
We will eat sometime in the midst of all that. Food will be there, spread out on the table(s). Eat when you want.

There are several of us working on this event. If it was just me, we would all end up sitting on a curb throwing rocks in a pail. So coastalfinds is helping. Let me rephrase that. coastalfinds is going to make this thing work. Lotus and Meowdoc are also helping. Others will probably help as well.

The Food

We will start grilling burgers and hot dogs at 3pm. Burgers and hotdogs will be provided.

It will be a "grab a plate and grab something to eat whenever you want" kind of etiquette. No set time to eat. Eat when you want, considering the other activities.

We need help with food. As stated above, burgers and hot dogs will be provided. Anything that you can bring is welcome. We need folks to bring drinks, chips, etc. We will coordinate this as the event grows nearer. Seven-layer dip is fantastic stuff, you know?

Explanation Of Rock, Paper, Scissors Geocache Game

  • There will be three caches hidden in the park area specifically for this game. They will be named "Rock", "Paper", and "Scissors". The Rock cache contains rock tokens. The Paper cache contains paper tokens. The Scissors cache contains scissors tokens. We will attempt to place these caches so that they can remain as permanent caches after the event.

  • The coordinates to the three caches will be provided to everyone prior to "go" time. A short time period will be allowed for everyone to program the three sets of coordinates into their machines.

  • When it looks like everyone is ready to go, a whistle will be blown. This marks "go" time, the start of a timed period in which players will try to visit as many of the three caches as they can and retrieve tokens from each. Some may be able to grab all three types of tokens, others two, some maybe one.

  • Important: For this to work, this has to be a timed search. To continue to play in the remainder of the game, players must be back at the designated spot by the end of the allotted time period. The time period will be determined later, but my guess is something like 45 minutes.

  • During the search, a loud warning sound, like an airhorn, will be blasted at exactly ten minutes before the cutoff time.

  • We will attempt to set up the time limit and cache placements such that two cache finds is quite doable, while three will be more of a challenge but possible. Anyone going for three and not making it back in time will be toast.

  • The search phase is just the start. After the search, the game continues...

  • All remaining players' names (hopefully everybody) will go into a hat. Two names will be drawn from the hat. Player 1 secretly places one of his/her tokens into a box. Player 2 secretly places one of his/her tokens into another box.

  • The tokens are then revealed. The classic rules of RPS apply. Paper covers rock. Rock breaks scissors. Scissors cut paper.

  • The winner of that hand goes back into the hat. The loser does not. Players retrieve their tokens.

  • The hat is shuffled, and again, two names are drawn... The game continues in this fashion until a first place and second place are established.

  • But that first place player is still not the winner. Not yet...

  • The player in first will be given the coordinates to a bonus cache, named "Rock, Paper, Scissors", and hidden somewhere in the park (this cache will remain a permanent cache after the event). He or she (or they) will given a five-minute head start. The length of the head start is subject to change.

  • The second-place player will then be given the coordinates to the final cache. Three more minutes pass.

  • Then everyone will be given the coordinates to the bonus cache.

  • Whoever finds the bonus cache first wins a trophy that will be made for this game. A photo of the trophy will be posted soon.

  • Players can be solo or teams. During the search, teams must stick together and retrieve tokens together.

  • Tokens cannot be exchanged or transferred from one player/team to another.

  • There will be a single special token (kind of a "trump" token) hidden in one of the three caches. It is called "Dynamite", and there is only one. It blows up Rock and obliterates Paper, but Scissors will cut off it's fuse.
Other Games And Fun

Puzzle Caches... Our local puzzlesmiths, Lotus and Meowdoc, are creating two or three puzzle caches for the event. They are making at least one easy, and at least one a little more difficult. Who knows, the more difficult one may or may not be found during the event. If we have a lot of trouble, they might give us some hints. These puzzle caches will remain as permanent posted caches after the event is over.

Angel's Movie... Angel's Buffy made a geocaching movie as part of a project for school. Copies of the movie are being burned onto DVDs, which will be given to folks at this event, for them to take home and keep.

Everybody Gets A Prize... There will also be a simple game/activity in which everyone who participates will receive a prize! Prizes TBD.

See you there!

The winner's trophy appears below. This trophy will be awarded to the team/player who retrieves the blue claim ticket from the final cache in accordance with the game description above.

In addition, Angel's Buffy has two Rangers baseball tickets to award to the team/player who comes out on top of the RPS throw-down. That team/player will likely be the one that is also awarded the trophy, due to the head start. However, it is possible that they will not be first to the cache. Either way, they will get the tickets. Tickets are redeemable at most games.
