This cache is outside Shornmead Fort near Gravesend. The terrain is quite flat and perfect for cycling but is often alive with off road motor bikes.Nearest parking is at the end of Canal road just where the cycle route path begins and outside the factory gate. Now a walk of about 1.5 miles along the cycle path at cross roads turn right down to the river and fort. The level crossing is now permanently closed from Queens Farm Road
The Fort was built around 1860 and one of several to guard the Thames against an invasion from the French. It was equipped with differant guns as the technology changed and never saw much use in its lifetime. In more recent times it has been used for military training as there is evidence of cannon shell marks fired from landward.
As you walk down the road to the fort on the right there are the remnants of anti glider invasion poles visible.
The cache is called 'Keep Duckin' because the area is used for firing practice by at one time the army but now the Metropolitan police. There is no danger though as you are more likley to get hit by a piano falling out of the sky than a stray round!
We have not made the cache too big as I am not sure how long it will last as the area is a magnet for the local youngsters as it is remote from civilisation.
This one is ideal for cycling to as there is a flat cycle path that could be easily tackled by even little kids but watch for motorbikes. You can also park at the end of Canal Road TQ70376E 73962N and \ride the 2 miles or so from there, and afterwards carry on to Gravesend town.
