Thomas Park is still an active park, split by N. 9th Street here in Salina. This cache is much easier to find than the other two caches close to exit 252. You should be able to do this one in a few minutes.
This part of Thomas Park used to have a drinking fountain, a few picnic tables, a narrow road that wound through and a couple of parking areas. Now it is just another forgotten area that out park employees have to mow.
When N. 9th was much narrower and before Interstate 135 came through, this park was used a lot. N. 9th was US 81 highway then. A nearby neighborhood grocery store provided traveling families with an opportunity to eat on a budget, before they left north out of Salina.
As a kid, we used to come up here and picnic once in awhile. A few mature oaks and a well kept lawn made this a refreshing little stop. This side was never as busy as the west side, it had restroom facilities and a small campground. Just to the east of here on N. 5th Street there is an old motel. A series of small cabins from when N. 5th was US 81 leaving Salina. My grandmother, grandfather and father lived in two of the old cabins that made up the motel. Times gone by....
It is best approached from the southwest, however, the best parking is on the south end of the frontage road to the north.
You will find the tree cover pretty thick and therefore I will include a pretty detailed clue as I want your hunt to be successful! Nothing matches the frustration of looking for a cache in tree cover, on a slope, with poor satellite reception and a clue that is vague or worthless.
Missy and Pupperdog were along for the ride today and they had a ball running through the area.
The ammocan had the usual, a notebook, an ink pen, a pencil, a geocaching.com sheet, and a few toys for the little girls and boys. Enjoy, have fun! Glen
