Geocache Description:

A short walk around Bromborough Pool Village Heritage Trail. This is the 19th century village built on Wirral by William Wilson for the workers of the Prices Patent Candle Factory. This is ideal for families as the trail is educational, on level tarmac with little traffic, and a total distance of 1km

HISTORY

Brothers William and George Wilson formed Price’s Patent Candles Ltd in 1830. Their first factory was in Battersea, London, and in 1853/54 they built their second factory on the Wirral. This change of location was because the raw product required to make the candles were imported from West Africa, and the port of entry for these products was Liverpool.

The Wilson family wanted to make sure that its employees were looked after properly, so it build a village where the factory was located, at Bromborough Pool. This was the second oldest ‘industrial’ village in the United Kingdom (the first was Saltaire near Bradford in Yorkshire in 1850)

Thirty-two houses were erected in York Street, and the first resident was a William Cutbill who moved to the village from Price's London works in January 1854. Sixteen more houses were built in Manor Place in 1856. Additionally, part of Court House Farm at Bromborough was rented and used as a hostel for twenty boys. By 1858 there were seventy-six houses with a population of 460. This grew to over 100 houses by 1878 and reached 140 houses by 1901.

Apart from the houses, the village had a church, institute, shop, school, hospital, library and allotments for its workforce. There were also numerous sport and pastime clubs set up for the residents. The Cricket Club had three members turn professional, and the Football Club played Everton in the 1870s and won the Liverpool Football Association Medal competition in 1884. Other examples of the company's far-sighted approach to its employees included the introduction of a profit sharing scheme for all staff in 1869 and a contributory employees' pension in 1893 - the first scheme in the country to include floor workers.

In 1919 Price's was taken over by its Port Sunlight neighbour and rivals Lever Brothers. Price's, with its candles, soap and other oil and fat products, was a convenient company to take over so that Levers could move into other products. Three years later, the jointly owned Candles Ltd was formed. In 1936 Lever Brothers pulled out of Candles Ltd, taking the Bromborough works and all the soap manufacturing rights with it.
